Offline proofing word lists and thesaurus (Quire, Ledger)
==========================================================

en_US.words and en_GB.words are SCOWL 2020.12.07's own word lists at size 60, accents stripped
(mk-list en_US 60 and mk-list en_GB-ise 60, http://wordlist.aspell.net): the lists SCOWL's Hunspell
en_US and en_GB-ise dictionaries are made from (LibreOffice ships the en_US one). en_GB.words is
rebuilt by tools/dict.py. Word commonness levels come from the English Speller Database (SCOWL,
https://github.com/en-wl/wordlist); British-only spellings take theirs from their SCOWL size.

en.thes is a trimmed copy of th_en_US_v2.dat from LibreOffice's English dictionary package
(https://github.com/LibreOffice/dictionaries, en/), derived from WordNet.

Permission to use, copy, modify, distribute, and sell any part of the English
Speller Database (ESDB, previously known as SCOWLv2), or word lists
created from it, is hereby granted without fee, provided that the above
copyright notice appears in all copies and that both the above copyright
notice and this notice appear in supporting documentation. Kevin Atkinson
makes no representations about the suitability of this database for any
purpose. It is provided "as is" without express or implied warranty.

ESDB is derived from many sources, most of which are in the Public Domain.
Data from the Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA) was also used.

All data from COCA comes from 3-gram data that is not freely available;
however, the usage is within the rights given by the NDA that was signed when
purchasing the data. More information on COCA is available at
https://www.english-corpora.org/coca/.

The primary source of words for ESDB comes from 12dicts and ENABLE2K. Both
are in the Public Domain, but Alan Beale <biljir@pobox.com> deserves special
credit as he is the author of 12dicts and a major contributor to ENABLE2K. In
addition, he gave me an incredible amount of feedback and created a number of
special lists in order to help improve the overall quality of ESDB.

If you are using an official speller dictionary created by ESDB that is not
Australian English, then no additional copyright applies and including the
notice before the === is sufficient.

Alan Beale <biljir@pobox.com> also deserves special credit as he has,
in addition to providing the 12Dicts package and being a major
contributor to the ENABLE word list, given me an incredible amount of
feedback and created a number of special lists (those found in the
Supplement) in order to help improve the overall quality of SCOWL.

The 10 level includes the 1000 most common English words (according to
the Moby (TM) Words II [MWords] package), a subset of the 1000 most
common words on the Internet (again, according to Moby Words II), and
frequently class 16 from Brian Kelk's "UK English Wordlist
with Frequency Classification".

The MWords package was explicitly placed in the public domain:

The Moby lexicon project is complete and has
been place into the public domain. Use, sell,
rework, excerpt and use in any way on any platform.

Placing this material on internal or public servers is
also encouraged. The compiler is not aware of any
export restrictions so freely distribute world-wide.

You can verify the public domain status by contacting

The "UK English Wordlist With Frequency Classification" is also in the
Public Domain:

  From: Brian Kelk <Brian.Kelk@cl.cam.ac.uk>

  > I was wondering what the copyright status of your "UK English
  > Wordlist With Frequency Classification" word list as it seems to
  > be lacking any copyright notice.

There were many many sources in total, but any text marked
"copyright" was avoided. Locally-written documentation was one
source. An earlier version of the list resided in a filespace called
PUBLIC on the University mainframe, because it was considered public
  domain.
